FAQs: Jerky for Dogs

Is jerky safe for dogs?

Yes—when it’s single-ingredient meat and properly dried with no preservatives or fillers, jerky is a safe, nutritious snack. Always supervise chewing and provide fresh water.

Which jerky is best for sensitive stomachs?

Many pet parents choose kangaroo jerky as a lean, novel protein that’s gentle on digestion. As long as a dog is not sensitive to a specific meat protein or fat, ANY of the jerkies will be very safe.  They are the natural original food that all domestic dogs ancestors hunted.

Can I use jerky for training?

Absolutely. Jerky is easy to snap into small pieces and is considered a high-value reward that keeps dogs focused. If you are after jerkies that you can easily snap with just your fingers, consider Kangaroo Jerky small, Beef Jerky PRIME, Emu, Crocodile or Lamb Jerky.

How much jerky can my dog have?

Treats should make up no more than 10%-20% of daily KJ/ calories.  Some Dog Nutrition books text suggest that dogs can easily eat up to 50% of their energy intake from Meat – so considering that most dog food is likely to have around 30% dried meat content. There is ample room to provide more quality protein in your dogs diet. Adjust portion sizes based on your dog’s size and activity level.

How do I store jerky treats?

Keep sealed in a cool, dry place. Use an airtight container after opening for best freshness. 100% single ingredient meat Jerkies do not have ANY preservatives and can last between 6 – 12 months in ideal pantry conditions.

Where are your treats made?

We’re an Australian family business, and our jerky is made in Australia from locally sourced meats. Except for one of the chicken breast & duck jerky (both Blackdog products). Be aware we provide TWO other AUSTRALIAN Jerky treats for those wanting ONLY Australian treats. Note any time that we have a legacy product (very few, and only from Blackdog) that isnt based in Australia, we clearly indicate this in the product description.
