Latest Dog Treat News (what does and doesn’t work for your dog)

Looking for the widest range of Healthy Dog Treats in Australia?

That’s all we do.  And because we have concentrated all our efforts on solving this problem since 2011, we are the best at it.

We are one of the few truly independent dog treats stores left in Australia, that specialise in Single ingredient (no additives or preservatives) dog treats for food supplements, dog training and general reward.

To help guide you on your selection, we have written many fact-based nutrition blogs on the matter. Some of our most important have links at the bottom of the ABOUT US page. The following gives a good snapshot of what we do, and how it helps you and your dog.

Are dog treats healthy?

NO, not all. And added to this is that the guidelines for dog foods globally have a very small amount of protein (18% required by aafco, from any source).  Early on we recognised that dogs didn’t need big advertising campaigns, and high-profile celebrities, they needed genuine nutrition, that mostly meant HIGH ANIMAL source PROTEIN. This also happens to be very bio-available to dogs unlike plant-based foods.

This typically means owners no longer have to rely on the giant brands that sell commercial dog food or have treats with as many ingredients as shampoo bottles (and are mostly plant based).

What dog treats are good for dogs?

These are mostly NATURAL ANIMAL based treats (single ingredient).  These all have HIGH protein levels (when dried typically 50% plus protein), which means a boost to all TEN essential amino acids your dog MUST get through their food.

While many people prefer supplement powders (we sell these too, as single ingredients of course), we also sell soft small treats, all the way to the biggest hardest animal-based treats for use as occupier treats.

FUNCTIONAL treats are also part of our speciality. It means treats that have a natural ingredient that improves or prevents a dog getting a bad health condition. Treats like shark cartilage that is high in Chondroitin and glucosamine (alleviates arthritis and helps rebuild joints, and provides pain management). Our treats with skin (like ling skin, chicken feet, shark skin) also assist Joint health (provided by collagen type 2).

Our kangaroo and fish treats are high in Omega 3, that support your dog’s body, heart and brain as well as acting as a natural anti-inflammatory.

Dog treats can be used for any reason, but when you are giving an incredibly tasty treat that your dog’s body craves and is actually good for them, you aren’t just adding kilojoules that are being wasted.

Why the wide variety of dog treats?

A fleet of marketers have advised us against having such a massive range. Yes, there are more stock handing issues, but we are more interested in the solutions we can provide owners and dogs than just selling ‘popular’ items.

How do I choose?

If you want one of the regular farmed animal meats that your dog is used to in dog food, we have all the majors:  Chicken, Beef, Pork and Lamb.

What about the more exotic dog treats?

People with dogs that are very food sensitive often come to us because of our hypo-allergenic range of treats such as Kangaroo, Fish and crocodile (100%).  They also make excellent dog training treats, since rare treats that dogs rarely get make the best HIGH VALUE reward.

What about something a little naughtier?

While we strongly recommend single ingredient meat-based treats above all else, we also carry the healthiest available range of dog biscuits and milk-based treats.

For instance, the biscuit range is from Blackdog (Melbourne made). They have a very wide range of dog biscuits, and the flavours are actual REAL (ie include real beef, real chicken, real activated charcoal etc) not just synthetic flavourings.

Our milk-based treats (yogurt, carob, strawberry and orange) similarly have actual yogurt and dried milk ingredients in them.

With such a wide treat range, how do I choose?

We have had this issue before when visiting various websites, so we chose to add Functional categories to assist in your selection.  Just check out the following categories, they are self-explanatory:

Are real bones good for dogs?

You may already have had a lot of advice from social media or your vet about bones, but when used safely, they provide an important function to your dog.

Yes, you need to match your dog with a suitable bone, for a specific reason (we have a dog bone guide here). But at its basis, dog’s ancestors hunted animals and ate their bones for the energy from the marrow, and the vital body minerals calcium and phosphorus.

While these minerals are added to commercial dog food, they are not always derived from natural bones (the most bio-available source). Bones also serve a primal dog need, and are a great mental stimulation as they work out how to hold and chew the bone. They also are one of the most important occupier treats, to reduce separation anxiety.

Our dried bones have the advantage over raw bones in that the oven drying kills 100% of the bacteria. As long as you get a big bone that they can’t crack, or you might choose a mid-sized softer bones, that they can safely eat (like chicken necks, pig’s trotters, chickens feet etc). Dogs naturally love the variety, texture, and of course nutrition!

I still can’t choose, do you have variety subs boxes?

Glad you asked.  We have created monthly dog subscription boxes that carry a discount for both the six month and 12 month subscriptions.  These do NOT auto re-subscribe so you are totally in control when the subscription ends.

If you want to test out if your dog likes what’s included, you can even order just buy one box, like a regular one-off dog treat purchase.

Wholesale dog treats for small business

Why should dog owners be the only ones who enjoy our bulk dog treat offerings?

We realised that many small businesses that only required a few kg of dog treats every few months were effectively shut out of providing quality healthy dog treats by the major players. We invite any business interested in doing so, to contact us.    We also provide a variety of small businesses the regular option of split low MOQ options.

Convenient, affordable and natural and/or Organic dog treats - because your dog deserves the best

Give your dog a variety of different meats and textures to enjoy, whether as a meal supplement, a treat for a special occasion, or a training tool.

You can rest assured your dog is getting the nutrients they need to live a long, healthy, happy life.

Any questions please ask us. We are known for our helpful dog focussed, customer service.

FAQ's

How often should I give my dog treats?
Treats should be given in moderation and should not make up more than 10% of your dog's daily diet. Depending on the size and activity level of your dog, you can give them one to three treats per day. NOTE Commercial dog foods are often very low in bio available protein that supplies the ESSENTIAL amino acids a dog needs for health. This is why 100% SINGLE ingredient dog treats (no additives or preservatives) can be used in higher amounts. Consult your vet if in doubt.
How many treats should I give my dog at one time?
The number of treats you can give your dog at one time depends on the size of the treat and your dog's size. As a general rule, it's best to stick to small, bite-sized treats and give your dog no more than 1-2 treats per training session. However if you are after an Occupier treat such as a bone, that should be bigger, so they dont eat it all at once. Also some of the harder jerkies and fish skins are meant to take time to eat.
Can I use dog treats as a reward during training?
Yes, dog treats can be a great reward during training as they provide positive reinforcement for good behavior. Note - we have created a specific dog treat category that includes the kind of small fast treats that are ideal for dog training
What should I look for when choosing dog treats?
When choosing dog treats, look for high-quality, all-natural (ANIMAL BASED) ingredients that are free of artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors. Consider your dog's dietary needs and any allergies or sensitivities they may have. NOTE - we have created several categories of HEALTHY DOG TREATS that can assist you in your selections: LOW FAT treats, TOPPERS - 100% single ingredient powdered Dog Treats NATURAL Dental Treats, Small SOFT dog treats, Medium dog treats, Strong Chewer treats,
How should I store my dog treats?
Dog treats should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or heat, as this can cause them to spoil or become stale. Check the expiration date on the package and discard any treats that have gone bad.
